Tiernan began his racing career in 2015 as an amateur jockey, partnering his first winner aboard Cider Hall at Kinsale in 2016. Over many seasons riding primarily in point-to-points he built up his experience, skills, and reputation while partnering over 45 winners in both Ireland and England. One of his standout achievements was winning the La Touche Cup at Punchestown in 2022 aboard Ballyboker Bridge for trainer Peter Maher.

A Champion First Season as a Conditional
Since becoming a fully-fledged conditional jockey in mid-2024, Tiernan has made an impressive start in Rules racing. He notched his first winner as a conditional aboard Miss Lia in August 2024 for trainer Philip Rothwell. He then went on to ride 29 winners, leading him to be crowned Champion Conditional for the 2024/2025 season.
