TRM® Ambassador Profile – Oliver Townend

Background:

Oliver Townend is a British Event Rider, who was raised in Scapegoat Hill in West Yorkshire. His love for horses started at 7 years of age and he has never looked back since then. Growing up in a family deeply involved in equestrian pursuits—his father as an event rider and his mother specializing in side-saddle—Townend’s affinity for horses was nurtured from a young age. For 3 years, he acquired a job of being stable jockey to the late British Event Team Showjumping trainer, Kenneth Clawson.

At just 11 years old, he achieved a notable victory by winning the junior newcomers showjumping at the Horse of the Year Show with a pony named Cool Mule. This marked the beginning of his journey, progressing to compete at the Pony European Eventing Championships at the age of 13. Townend’s commitment to his equestrian pursuits led him to leave school at 16, opting to pursue a professional career in riding and horse trading.

Oliver set up firstly at the home place, Lubenham Lodge, Leicestershire. This was to start him off when he had little or no money to his name. However, within five years, he overcame these obstacles and successfully acquired his own farm in Ellesmere, Shropshire, where he is currently based. Townend’s primary focus revolves around developing top-tier eventers capable of reaching the pinnacle of the sport and attracting new owners to join his endeavours.

Townend needs little introduction being ranked World Number 1 Event Rider. 2009, sparked a start to his impeccable career being the winner of both Badminton and Burghley, these horses were named Flint Curtis and Carousel Quest. This success marked the beginning of a series of accomplishments, with two additional wins at Burghley and consecutive triumphs at Kentucky in 2018, 2019, and 2021 aboard his notable steed, Cooley Master Class.

Townend’s international representation for Britain includes notable appearances at the World Equestrian Games in 2006 and 2014. A significant milestone in his career was the selection of Oliver and Ballaghmor Class to represent Great Britain at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, fulfilling a lifelong dream. The team secured a gold medal, and individually, Oliver claimed the fifth position. In the previous year, Townend celebrated his seventh 5* competition victory abroad with Ballaghmor Class at Burghley.

Ballaghmor Class, described by Townend as a “horse of a lifetime,” has been instrumental in his success, boasting an impressive record of 10 5* competitions, 9 top 5 5* placings, 3 5* wins, and 2 Team GB gold medals. Townend has held the World Number 1 title three times and has been the British Number 1 seven times since 2009. Oliver was back at the top of the FEI Rider Rankings table having won 569 points in the 2023 year.

Goals/Targets:

Oliver Townend has achieved remarkable milestones throughout his career, yet one notable aspect is his humility. A dedicated advocate for various global charities, he actively supports and brings attention to their causes. Recently, he partnered with Air Ambulances as their ambassador, emphasizing the crucial role this service plays in the equine industry. Townend is committed to ensuring the hard work of these organizations is duly recognized, with their funding relying on generous donations.

Among Townend’s aspirations is the pursuit of another Olympic gold medal at this year’s Olympics. The Great Britain eventing team has secured a team eventing ticket to Paris 2024, where they aim to put their best efforts forward in pursuit of a medal.

"TRM's IRONXCELL really helps from the inside out & makes the difference from being a 5* runner to a 5* winner".
