TRM® Ambassador Profile – José Fumero Hernandez
Background:
Hailing from the Canary Islands, José Fumero Hernandez defied the odds in a region not traditionally associated with professional showjumping. Inspired by his father’s passion for riding and ownership of horses, José’s journey began with his first horse, Atalaya. Alongside his brother, he rode her daily after school, competing in various disciplines including dressage, jumping, and raid.
While his brother pursued other interests, José remained focused on showjumping, continuously watching Eurosport on TV hoping one day he could appear. During his young rider years he trained with Henk Nooren from Bergen, Netherlands. After school, at 22, José attending university and studied law. During his university years, José seized the opportunity to work alongside Eduardo Álvarez Aznar, a former Spanish Olympian, honing his skills and expanding his knowledge. At the age of 25, José made the bold decision to relocate to Belgium, the heartland of European showjumping, to establish his own business. Covid-19 hit forcing him to then relocated back to Spain.
Career Highlights:
José’s journey in showjumping is filled with impressive achievements. He won medals at the Spanish Championships as both a junior and a young rider before representing Spain at the European Championships. A standout moment was his 9th place finish at the European Championships, narrowly missing a podium spot.
Another notable achievement was his victory in the CSI2* Grand Prix in Gijon aboard Cadum. This win marked José’s second career triumph at the 2* level, showcasing his skill and potential on the international stage.
Key to José’s success was his partnership with Corelli de Mies, a stallion he purchased as a 4-year-old. Corelli de Mies, is a stallion by Calvaro Z out of Coco De Mies. Together, they rose through the ranks, leaving a lasting impact on the sport. José eventually sold Corelli de Mies at the age of 8 years old to Edwina Tops Alexander. Corelli de Mies was more than a horse; he was José’s starting point, igniting his passion for showjumping and propelling him towards success.
Goals/Targets:
This season, José has ambitious plans lined up, starting with relocating his operation back to Holland. His primary focus? Developing two promising mares he believes have the potential to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
One of these rising stars is April S Memory, a 6-year-old mare sired by Aganix du Seigneur out of Escudo. Currently impressing at the Sunshine Tour with consistent clear rounds. Another exciting prospect in José’s stable is Qornetta Van Stal de Toyer, an 8-year-old mare by Cornet Obolensky out of Bentley vd Heffinck. With her pedigree and talent, José sees immense potential in Qornetta.
Moving his operation to Holland brings José another advantage: coaching from Eric Van der Vleuten, a significant asset. José’s goals for the season also include expanding his stable with new horses and focusing on sales..
